I remember watching the movie Braveheart in my teenage. Guess who I cheered! ("Go Longshanks, go!")

Actually I'm a Scot and I quite like that song. So some Scottish mercinaries took a dinging in a battle...wouldn't be the first time.

They also behaved pretty badly in Scotland, too, you know. In fact the upper classes all across Europe were not exaclty noted for egalitarianism, were they? I don't know why the Scots would be different.

I don't think the Scots are particularly special for being victims of the English. Every race has been screwed over by the English at some point in time. Laughing They even screwed over their own, that's why the US exists, it was founded by English people who got fed up.

Canada, particularly Atlantic Canada, has a large population of descendants of people who were kicked out of Scotland during the Highland Clearances, since they were mainly displaced to British possessions in North America. A lot of Canadian folk music speaks of the stories of these people. A lot of proud Scots who have maintained their language and culture, even the clan system to a certain extent, which is good to see. But yeah, maybe it would not be a good idea to drive my car down the streets in Halifax where I currently am, blaring that song, since it's the capital city of a very proudly Scottish province. Laughing

Though I am surprised to learn that Scots were tyrants in Orkney and Shetland, considering if you read into Canadian history, the Scots were the only European group who treated the Indians as their equals, while the French claimed they were heathens and forced them to convert to Christianity by means of brainwashing, torture, and emotional and sexual abuse, and the English killed them en masse. That and if you look at the surnames of some of Canada's most socially progressive politicians, a lot of them are Highland Scots, and the Canadian politician who rescinded segregation laws targeting Jews was an FOB from Scotland... though we've kind of regressed with our current PM in power, whatever ethnicity he is, I don't care I just cannot wait for the next election. Aren't you referring to two distinct peoples? The former would to me sound like the Germanic Scots, who speak Scots or Scottish English as a native language, while the latter to me could be the Scots Gaels, speaking Scots Gaelic as their native language.

Yeah. most Scots in Canada were Gaels.

I wasn't thinking there.
