I was just listening to Gandkvæði Tróndar and I was wondering if anyone knows the chanting in the background. I haven't yet found it written down anywhere and it's too quiet to hear (to me anyway; probably because my Faroese isn't that good!)

Takk

Hm...I don't know exactly what you mean, but it is Gandkvæði Tróndar. I found only this lyrics online:

Hevjið í homrum
Harðmælta kvæðIð,
Villu valkyrjur,
Vetrarins børn,
Tit mínar frælsu,
Froysandi hvirlur,
Føddar av ódn.

Hastið í hernað
Hamranmna døtur,
Vekið til veldis
Vilt glaðustrok;
Gravið frá grunni
Goysandi orrusturok.

Ramar eg risti
Rúnir, Ið rinda
Ravni ræ.
Sanna skal Sigmundur,
Tróndur trøllsterkur kvað.

Verjast skal valhøll,
Ið vølvur veittu
Miklum norðlanda monnum til mið.
Eydnast at inna
Ei skal Signumdi
Eystlanda sið.

Fjallfríðu Føroyar,
Ramasta rúnin,
Ritað av gudum
Um einstakra rætt!
Trygdareið Tróndur
Hann treystligt at verja
Svór síni ætt.

Hevjið í homrum
Harðmælta kvæðIð,
Villu valkyrjur
Veiti mær vørn.
Fram móti Sigmundi
Skip hansar sorandi,
Land honum forðandi,
Fram móti kristni
Kirkjurnar brótandi,
Tróndur til Tórs og til Óðins er blótandi,
Høgt kvøður heiðin ørn.

I don't know if it's exactly the correct lyrics and at the moment I have no time to check it. Anker or Heri will know that best. On Heris myspace blog you can also find the english translation of it, made by Anker.

Those are the lyrics yes, but there's a chanting behind the actual lyrics and what is sung in that chanting isn't in the booklet.
One of the best intros ever btw. "Høgt kvøður heiðin ørn" and the whole ending gives me goosebumps.

Fourthhorseman is correct; there is a background chant indeed, and I cannot find the words to it.

What exactly does "Høgt kvøður heiðin ørn" mean because I swear kvøður means to chant Laughing (but in the booklet, it says "The Heathen Eagle Flies High")

It is the ballad 'Kjartan Ólavsson', recorded in Funningur in the 50s I think; I don't remember precisely and don't have time to check right now.

Thanks Google, I found this from Cat's (I think) interview:
"‘For future tours we will use it as an intro and simply play it off the CD. It will be on the CD as intro for the album and I use the same [musical] theme for the melody of a song also. It’s called Kjartans Táttur. It’s about Kjartan Ólavsson, some guy from Iceland in the Viking age and some quarrel between him and a friend over his wife, and travel to Norway and then...you know, the usual stuff in Icelandic sagas.

That’s not really what interests me: it’s the melody itself, it’s extremely good. And it fits very well to the poetry of Djurhuus. If it was possible to make the poem fit the rhythm of the ballad, I would change the lyric, but there’s no way. It’s completely free poetry, it follows no stanze or anything, so it’s not very good for melodies.’"

Ah, thank you Heri. I can begin searching for it now.

a traditional melody that was released by TUTL, I don’t remember exactly when or where.

I'm sure we can just look up TUTL to find out when!

hej guys,
one question: in which language is Kjartan Táttur written? Is it Icelandic or Faeroes? And is there another melody or is the melody Gandkvæði the right one?

Were it in Icelandic the title would probably be ,,Kjartans Þáttur" so... Smile

I've found some lyrics of Kjartan Ólafsson. But I don't know how long it is in Gandkvæði Tróndar, but I think this is longer than that. If you listen carefully you can hear some of the lyrics. Smile

Kjartan Ólafssons kvæði

1.

2.
Ríða út av Hjarðarholtið
reystar kempur báðar,
fyrstur reið Bolli Tollaksson,
tá ið Kjartan var ikki hjá.

3.
Kjartan legði at Leygará,
mongum tað væl tókti,
snarliga runnu ástir saman
við Guðruna Ósvivsdóttir.

4.
Kjartan gongur fyri faðir sín,
leitar við hann ráð:
Vøn er Guðrun Ósvivsdóttir
eg vil ta frúnna fá.

5.
Sømir tað øllum høviskum køllum
læra spekt og sinni
"Líkari var tær mín sæli son
tín velduga harra at finna."

6.
Svaraði Kjartan Ólavsson
av so góðum treysti:
"Finna skal eg mín velduga harra
á hesum sama heysti."

7.
Kjartan gongur við Guðrun at tala,
tað mátti eingin hoyra,
segði frúnni frá ætlan sín,
hon rodnaði sum ein droyri.

8.
Leggur hann hendur um frúnnar háls,
mælir við hana so blíðum:
"Ísland skal eg á sumri hava,
væl máttú mær bíða."

9.
Lat tær góðan hugin siga,
aftur man eg koma,
elska tær ikki annan mann,
ei heldur eg mær konu.

10.
Lat tær góðan hugin siga,
aftur komi eg við lív,
elska tær ikki annan mann
ei heldur eg mær vív.
